Welcome

From the Program Director

Thank you for your interest in the Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery Residency Program at the George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences (GW SMHS). Dr. William Wilson started the program in 1995 and graduated the first resident in 1999. Since then, Dr. Steven Bielamowicz, the current Division Chief, has matured and expanded the program.

We have an exceptional group of well-trained and enthusiastic academic otolaryngology faculty at the George Washington University Medical Faculty Associates and the Children’s National Health Center. All the subspecialties of otolaryngology – head and neck surgery are well represented.  We have full accreditation from the ACGME Otolaryngology RRC.

One year of "general surgery" at GW SMHS is required followed by four years of dedicated otolaryngology training. Your intern year is now controlled by otolaryngology and you will rotate for six months on the GW Otolaryngology service.  Useful off-service intern rotations will include anesthesia, intensive care, neurosurgery, and neuroradiology.  In order to cover every aspect of academic and community otolaryngology, PGY-2 to PGY-5 residents rotate at four sites:

  1. The George Washington University Hospital
  2. Children’s National Health Center
  3. Holy Cross Hospital
  4. Kaiser Permanente

Our goal is to teach you the medical knowledge, the clinic and surgical skills, and appropriate habits and discipline to be an excellent otolaryngologist. All of our graduates have received excellent training and are well prepared for life after residency. Their post graduation activities have included private practice, fellowship training, NIH research, academic appointments, and military assignments. You will be well prepared to enter any field of your choice when you finish your training here.
